Songwriters Retreat
Notice:
If you made it to this page, thank you for your interest in the Songwriters Retreat. We are so bummed to announce that this year’s 2024 spring retreat is going to have to be postponed due to several unexpected circumstances. But if you’re not already on our mailing list, please sign up so we can let you know when it gets rescheduled!
Make your songs shine.
2nd Annual
Shine Songwriters & Songcatchers Retreat
Searching for your creative community?
The retreat provides an opportunity to learn and practice the craft of songwriting, or as we like to say “songcatching”, to develop and expand musical skills, and to commune and share with others, yourself, and nature, in an intimate and connected way.
We believe songs to exist before they caught. That’s why we like to refer to the songwriter as more of a song”catcher”, in which the practice is more listening than writing. This opens themselves to Mystery and faithfully delivers whatever magic moves through them. The entire process becomes a practice that brings the willing participant to the edge of their knowing over and over again, strengthening our imagination muscles and teaching us all how to be more whole and more human.
The process of bringing a song into existence is sacred. It deserves all the care of a hospital delivery room and all the attention of a wedding ceremony.
As a community of songcatchers, we see ourselves as doulas or cheerleaders for each other - passing on the collective wisdom of this sacred process, walking with and guiding others into a rhythm of creative ease and wonder.
Our mission is to support songcatchers & songwriters of all skill levels and genres, to foster collaboration, and provide a safe space where individuals can express themselves through music and storytelling.
In addition to the songwriting and music discussion topics offered, the main event is an open mic session each night where participants share songs they have written, or are working on. All of this magic is set in a location that provides an environment conducive to creativity, support and relaxation.
What’s Included:
Opening Songwriters Performance
To kick off the event, come watch last year’s retreat participants perform some of their new original songs at the Snowy Owl Theatre, an event open to the public, so feel free to bring a friend. (This could be you next year!)
Open Mic Nights
This is the heart of the retreat. Each night we will gather together in an intentional and supportive space, around the campfire if the weather permits, to share original songs. Participants are encouraged to talk about the process.
Discussions
Whether you are a professional or don’t identify as a “musician,” We have lots of dynamic ways you can participate and learn. Mornings will be dedicated to discussions on facilitated topics relating to all aspects of songwriting such as lyricism, arranging, storytelling, form, musicality, circle singing, vocal improv, drumming, music performance, confidence and more!
Perhaps you are looking for inspiration, focus, collaborating partners, constructive feedback, or technical help. Maybe you simply need the time and dedicated space to do more of what you love. We want this event to help unblock whatever barrier might be standing in your way.
Small Practice Space
Have a collaborative idea and just need some dedicated hours to practice together? We will have a small handful of private, nature inspired practice huts to inspire your creative collaborative flow.
Movement
Begin each day with an optional, inspiring led movement class such as yoga or qi gong, taught by local teachers.
Group Connection and Play
Part of what makes this event unique is the safe, supportive and connected space we create. We will be taking some time to get to know each other and offer some fun, connecting activities to make the weekend even more awesome. Optional, yet encouraged!
Reflection Time/Hiking/Fun
We came here to relax, right?! Take the time you need to unwind, be still and let inspiration find you. We will provide lots of free time and space for reflection, hiking and connection with other activities. The property offers hiking trails, big starry skies, an art walk, organic garden and a serene and meditative nature experience.
Accommodation
Accommodations are clean, comfy and easily accessible within and near the main meeting rooms. Sleeping arrangements consist of clean, cozy shared rooms in different configurations (queen beds and bunk beds, all in shared rooms). First come first serve so sign up now if you want a specific room! If you prefer to bunk with a particular person, please include their name in your registration and we will do our best to accommodate. For those that prefer guaranteed private accomodations, that’s an option as well, at the neighboring property, Sleeping Lady Resort.
The facility is open and encouraging to groups of all beliefs and backgrounds. The meeting spaces are welcoming and versatile.
